Eclipse Global Consult Completes Feasibility Study on Deforestation-Free Cocoa Value Chain Project in Sierra Leone

Eclipse Global Consult has successfully completed a comprehensive feasibility study for the project titled “Scaling a Deforestation-Free Cocoa Value Chain through the Empowerment of Small and Medium Producers in Kenema and Kailahun Districts, Sierra Leone,” commissioned by Welthungerhilfe (WHH). The study represents a significant step toward promoting sustainable cocoa production while strengthening the livelihoods of farming communities in Eastern Sierra Leone.

The assessment involved extensive fieldwork, stakeholder consultations, and data collection across cocoa-producing communities in Kenema and Kailahun Districts. The study examined key factors influencing the viability of a deforestation-free cocoa value chain, including land use practices, environmental sustainability, market opportunities, access to finance, producer capacity, and compliance with emerging international regulations governing sustainable cocoa production.

Through engagement with farmers, producer groups, cooperatives, local authorities, and other value chain actors, the study generated valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges facing small and medium-scale cocoa producers. Particular attention was given to identifying strategies that can enhance productivity, strengthen market access, improve organizational capacity, and promote environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

The findings and recommendations from the feasibility study will serve as an important resource for Welthungerhilfe and its partners in designing future interventions that support sustainable cocoa production, forest conservation, and inclusive economic growth. The study further highlights the potential of Sierra Leone’s cocoa sector to contribute to rural development while safeguarding critical natural ecosystems.

Eclipse Global Consult is proud to have contributed to this important initiative and remains committed to delivering high-quality research and evidence-based solutions that drive sustainable development across Sierra Leone and beyond.
